Rogue's Review:A superbly subtle and subversive head trip
Swimming Pool is one of those rare films that exists as two different movies - once you've seen it and understand what's actually going on, you have to see it again, when it will be an entirely different film, knowing what you will know after having seen it the first time. I love films that exist on that level, particularly when they're well constructed, and I have to say that this is one of the most cleverly written films in this category that I have ever seen. It's brilliantly acted as well, courtesy of the great Charlotte Rampling and wonderful newcomer Ludivine Sagnier (for whom Ozon wrote the movie).
1/8/08: Wanted to add that I've seen it a couple of times on cable since my first theatre viewing, and the film definitely holds up to repeat viewings, which is very rare as well. Still get goosebumps at the end. |
