Rogue's Review:

Exalting in the damage

I saw this film before getting to see the documentary of the same name made by the same two guys a few years ago; since then I've seen the documentary as well, and I feel more equipped to comment on the fictionalized version now.

I liked it. Actually, I was in the theatre smiling for the first two-thirds of it ~ who could resist the over-the-top shenanigans of those two delirious scamps, James St. James and Michael Alig, I ask you? I mean let's face it, obscene excess is intoxicatingly appealing on some sordid, irresponsible, vicarious level.

The reason I wanted to see the documentary was to see the real-life Alig and St. James, to find out how the performances of Culkin and Green (sounds like a law firm) stacked up, and while the real two weren't actually as flamboyant and campy in their 'normal' lives, the two actors did manage to capture the outrageous atrocity of their personalities.
