Rogue's Review:

De Niro and Franco rise above the material. . .

. . .to make "City by the Sea" ultimately heartfelt and meaningful.

This very sad-but-true story would have drowned in its own pathos in act one if not for these two performances. De Niro does everything within his power to craft a credible character and not a caricature of one and he succeeds; James Franco (from Mike White's "Freaks & Geeks") fares equally well as De Niro's son Joey, creating a genuinely sympathetic, 3-dimensional individual - lost, flawed and desperately needing his father's love.

While not as cathartic as it probably should have been, "City by the Sea" does have the grace of these two heartfelt performances going for it.
